Financing an Engagement Ring in Quebec: What Should You Check Before Signing?

Monthly payments, taxes, interest and 0% offers: here’s how to compare engagement ring financing without stretching your budget.

Can you buy an engagement ring in installments in Quebec? Depending on the retailer or lender, different solutions may be available: purchase financing, a personal loan or a credit card. Their availability and terms should be confirmed before you choose the ring, however. The real question is not just “how much per month?” but “how much will I pay in total, and for how long?” A comfortable payment can hide a long borrowing period. Here’s how to compare your options without letting the payment method dictate your choice.

Start by setting your limit, including taxes. In Quebec, the 5% GST and 9.975% QST together represent 14.975% of the price before taxes. A ring listed at $3,000 therefore comes to $3,449.25, before any financing fees. Spread over 12 months with no interest or fees, that works out to approximately $287.44 per month, with a small adjustment to the final payment. Over 24 months, it would be approximately $143.72. The price of the ring stays the same, but your commitment lasts twice as long.

To determine whether that payment works for you, start with your actual budget rather than the amount of credit offered. After housing, groceries, transportation, debts and planned savings, how much is comfortably left over? If you have $300 available each month, a $287 payment leaves very little room for unexpected expenses. You could lower your ring budget or save a down payment before buying. Avoid treating your emergency fund as money available for the ring: it already has another purpose.

A 0% offer deserves a careful read, even when it looks straightforward. Ask whether that rate applies throughout the entire contract and whether there are any mandatory fees. Also check what happens if you pay late or still have a balance when the promotion ends. Some deferred-interest programs can lead to substantial interest charges when their conditions are not met. Get written confirmation of the total cost, payment dates and consequences of a missed payment. “Interest-free” and “fee-free” do not necessarily mean the same thing.

To compare two offers, use exactly the same starting price, down payment and, ideally, repayment period. Then record the amount financed, annual rate, mandatory fees and sum of all installment payments. Add the down payment and any fees paid separately to calculate your total outlay. For example, $300 in fees on a $3,000 purchase before taxes already represents 10% of that price, even before interest. A lower monthly payment is therefore not proof of savings: it may simply be spread over a longer period.

A credit card calls for particular caution. If you do not repay the balance according to the terms required to avoid interest, the cost of the ring can increase significantly. The minimum payment on your statement is not a repayment plan tailored to your purchase. Before choosing this option, set a fixed monthly payment and a date by which you will repay the balance in full, then check the applicable rate. Another possibility: saving $250 a month for 12 months gives you $3,000 with no borrowing costs, but you will still need to allow for taxes if your target price is before taxes.

Before signing, also check how payment fits into the ordering process. Ask when a deposit is required, when the balance becomes due and whether installment payments begin before you receive the ring. Check the lender’s terms separately from the jeweller’s policies, particularly for exchanges: an exchange does not automatically mean the financing is cancelled. At AUCLAIRE, production in Montreal takes 3 to 4 weeks, with a 3D rendering before production. Delivery within Quebec is free and insured; exchanges are available within 30 days, with no refunds. Taxes are extra.

The right purchase is one where you feel as good about the impact on your budget as you do about the ring. First, set a comfortable total amount, then compare rings before deciding how to pay; any financing arrangements still need to be confirmed with the relevant provider. To take the next step at your own pace, ask the AUCLAIRE workshop for three options with GIA- or IGI-certified centre diamonds that fit your budget. Request both the before-tax price and the tax-inclusive total for each. You can then compare concrete choices without being guided solely by a small monthly payment.
