1-Carat or 1.5-Carat Diamond: Which Should You Choose for an Engagement Ring?

Compare 1- and 1.5-carat diamonds by dimensions, appearance on the hand and total budget—not just the number on the certificate.

Are you deciding between a 1-carat and a 1.5-carat diamond for an engagement ring? The difference is visible, but not necessarily in the way you might imagine. A 1.5-carat diamond weighs 50% more without looking 50% wider. To choose, you need to consider its actual dimensions, cut quality, setting and your total budget. The best purchase is not automatically the heaviest stone: it is the one whose appearance you love, without a compromise that bothers you.

Carat measures a diamond’s weight: 1 carat equals 0.20 grams, compared with 0.30 grams for 1.5 carats. As a general guide, a well-proportioned 1-carat round diamond often measures around 6.4 to 6.5 mm in diameter; a 1.5-carat round, around 7.3 to 7.5 mm. These measurements vary with proportions. Comparing 6.5 mm with 7.4 mm gives you approximately 14% more diameter, not 50%. Always ask for the dimensions listed on the gemological report rather than relying on weight alone.

On the hand, that difference of less than 1 mm can be quite noticeable. Its effect depends on finger width and the design you choose, however. A thin band generally gives the diamond more visual prominence; a wider band creates a different overall look without changing the stone’s dimensions. For a useful comparison, try both weights on the same finger, with settings that are as similar as possible. Then look at your hand from a normal distance, not just in an enlarged photo taken very close up.

A common mistake is choosing 1.5 carats while sacrificing too much cut quality. For a round diamond, the way the stone is cut strongly influences its sparkle. A heavier stone may also carry some of its weight in its depth rather than its visible width. Compare the diameter, proportions and cut information on the certificate, then observe the stones under several lighting conditions. A brightly lit video is not enough: ask to see them under diffuse lighting as well, without flattering spotlights.

To compare prices, keep the criteria consistent: natural or laboratory-grown origin, shape, colour, clarity and comparable cut quality. Moving from 1 to 1.5 carats does not follow a simple proportional calculation; the price also depends on each stone’s characteristics and availability. Request a quote that itemizes the diamond, setting and any additional fees. In Quebec, a hypothetical total of $3,000 before taxes becomes $3,449.25 with GST and QST, a combined 14.975%. Plan for that difference from the start.

Between the two, a 1.2- or 1.3-carat diamond sometimes deserves a place in the comparison. It may offer the visual balance you want, but it does not guarantee savings: everything depends on the stone offered. The same applies to a diamond just below a round-number weight, such as 0.95 carats. Do not choose it simply because it seems to avoid a price threshold. Check its dimensions and appearance. A good selection includes three genuinely comparable stones, with their weight, measurements, certificate and price clearly listed.

Think about everyday life before deciding, too. A ring that catches on gloves or interferes with certain movements does not become more comfortable because its diamond is bigger. Setting height, prong shape and the setting’s design matter as much as weight to overall comfort. If you will wear a wedding band, also check how the two rings will sit together. At AUCLAIRE, a 3D rendering is presented before production in Montreal, which takes 3 to 4 weeks. It helps you visualize the project without replacing an on-finger try-on.

To move forward simply, set a tax-inclusive spending limit and identify your priority: presence on the hand, sparkle or budget balance. You can then compare without letting the carat number alone guide you. If you would like some help, keep the request straightforward: ask the AUCLAIRE workshop for three GIA- or IGI-certified centre diamond options, around 1 carat, an intermediate weight and 1.5 carats, depending on availability and your budget. With their dimensions and a quote for each complete ring, you will have better reference points to choose at your own pace.
