Deciding between a solitaire engagement ring and a pavé ring? The choice is about more than “simple or sparkly.” A plain band primarily highlights the centre diamond, while a pavé band adds small diamonds along part of its surface. The difference also affects your budget, maintenance and resizing possibilities. To keep the comparison clear, we are discussing a plain-band solitaire and a ring with a centre diamond and a pavé band: the terms used in jewellery can sometimes overlap.
Start by considering where you want the eye to go. With a plain band, the centre diamond’s outline and proportions take the spotlight. With pavé, many small reflections complement the stone and give the overall ring a more sparkling appearance. That does not automatically make the centre diamond look bigger. Ask to see both styles with a stone of the same dimensions, under comparable lighting. A short video in diffused light will often be more useful than a photo taken under spotlights that make every surface sparkle.
When comparing prices, keep the rings as similar as possible: the same metal, the same gold karat, comparable centre diamonds and similar band proportions. Pavé adds stones and setting work, but the extra cost varies with the design. As a purely illustrative example, a $500 difference before tax comes to approximately $574.88 with GST and QST at current rates. Also ask for the total weight of the small diamonds separately from the centre diamond’s weight. A ring advertised as “1 carat total” does not necessarily have a 1-carat centre diamond.
Next, think about your daily routine. The small diamonds in a pavé setting are held by tiny sections of metal that deserve particular attention after an impact or if the ring suddenly starts catching on clothing. A plain band has fewer stones to monitor, but that does not make its centre setting invulnerable. For weight training, manual work or gardening, removing the ring remains a good habit in either case. If your priority is an easy-to-wear ring, a plain band is worth trying before deciding it lacks sparkle.
Not all pavé designs come with the same considerations. Half-pavé generally leaves a plain section beneath the finger; full pavé places stones all the way around the band. This difference matters for friction and potential resizing, which is often more complex when stones encircle the entire band. Before buying, ask what adjustment would be possible for that specific design and at what cost. Also check comfort between your fingers and contact with a future wedding band: two rings that touch can wear against each other, depending on their construction.
The quality of a pavé ring cannot be judged solely by its number of diamonds. Look at the consistency of the setting, the alignment of the stones and how smooth the edges feel. A very thin band is not automatically well suited to daily wear; its width, thickness and construction need to be considered together. Ask what the warranty covers if a small stone is lost, and what is instead considered maintenance or accidental damage. A warranty against diamond breakage does not necessarily mean that a lost stone is covered.
To choose between options, request a detailed quote for each ring and ask the same questions: what are the centre diamond’s characteristics, how many small diamonds are there, what is their total weight and which services are included? The centre diamond’s report does not necessarily describe all the pavé stones. At AUCLAIRE, centre diamonds are GIA- or IGI-certified, and every piece comes with an AUCLAIRE certificate of authenticity. These documents do not, however, replace a comparison of the setting, comfort and written terms.
Ultimately, the best choice is the one whose appearance and everyday requirements both suit you. If you are still undecided, you can ask the AUCLAIRE atelier for three options with a GIA- or IGI-certified centre diamond: a plain-band solitaire, a design with subtle pavé and a more sparkling version, specifying your tax-inclusive budget. A 3D rendering is presented before production, which takes 3 to 4 weeks in Montreal. This lets you compare concrete proposals rather than choosing solely based on the number of small diamonds.
